Why get tested?

HIV testing is integral to HIV prevention, treatment, and care efforts. Knowledge of one's HIV status is important for preventing the spread of disease. Testing provides an opportunity for people to receive counseling and information about risk reduction, and many who learn they are HIV positive modify their behavior to reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Early knowledge of HIV status is also important for linking those who are HIV positive to medical care and services that can reduce morbidity and mortality and improve quality of life.

In 2006, the Center for Disease Control, (CDC) released revised recommendations for testing of adults, adolescents and pregnant women in Health Care SettingsPDF file. In the revised guidelines the CDC advises routine HIV screening of adults, adolescents, and pregnant women in health care settings in the United States. They also recommend reducing barriers to HIV testing.

The CDC continues by noting "HIV testing has become easier, more accessible, and less invasive in recent years. Rapid HIV testing allows clients to receive results the same day, which is useful in urgent medical circumstances and in settings where clients tend not to return for HIV test results."

Currently there are several HIV tests sanctioned by the FDA:
